Who We Sponsor
Visa sponsorship practices at Penn State
The university offers visa sponsorship and work eligibility for full-time academic teaching or research positions that require a doctoral or terminal degree, as long as both the candidate and the position meet the eligibility criteria. This policy applies to both tenure-line and non-tenure-line positions. For specific guidance on postdoctoral scholars, please refer to Special Visa Guidance for Postdoctoral Scholars.
Tenure-line candidates: Typically receive sponsorship for temporary non-immigrant status (usually H-1B) for initial onboarding and for permanent residency ("green card") for long-term employment.
- Non-tenure-line candidates: Generally, qualify for non-immigrant visa sponsorship (most commonly H-1B, TN, or E-3).
- The university does not sponsor staff positions or part-time faculty.
- Sponsorship requests must be initiated by the hiring unit and will be evaluated by International Faculty Advising (IFA), which will then provide visa sponsorship options to the hiring unit.
- For any questions regarding sponsorship eligibility, send them to FacultyAdvising@psu.edu.
