Religion, Faith, & Spirituality Abroad

Religious and spiritual practices vary around the world, so it's good to know what your religious freedom and community might look like abroad.

Hero background

Education abroad allows you to explore new cultures and environments, which can bring both exciting opportunities and unique challenges when it comes to maintaining and expressing your spiritual or religious practices. Depending on your program's location, freedom of expression in regard to religion may differ, and finding your religious or spiritual community may be more or less difficult.

Understanding the nuances of your host country will enable you to have a more fulfilling education abroad experience. The Education Abroad Office is committed to supporting you through this process!

Questions to consider:

  • What are the major religious/spiritual groups in my host location, if any?
  • Does religion influence the social and political landscape of my host country? Is there a distinction between religion and governance?
  • What are the regulations concerning religion or spirituality in this location? Will I be able to practice my religion in public safely? If so, where?
  • What are the local attitudes toward religion and spirituality? Is my religion widely practiced? Am I comfortable disclosing my beliefs and practices to others?
  • If I cannot practice my religion or faith in this location, how will that impact my experience?
  • What religious observances may coincide with my education abroad program's duration, and how might they influence my academic or work schedule?
  • When visiting sacred sites, what attire is appropriate, and how can I display reverence toward sacred objects or places?
  • Is it culturally acceptable and safe to wear specific religious attire or symbols?
  • What support resources exist on-site to help me find communities that practice my religion?

Tips from the Education Abroad Office:

  • Research your host country: Before your departure, look into the significance of religions in your host country, considering variations in religious tolerance and freedom. These factors could impact your interactions, attire, or participation in religious activities.
  • Have an open mind: While navigating your faith abroad, it's essential to approach new experiences with an open mind and respect for local customs and beliefs. Understanding and adapting to cultural differences can enhance your education abroad experience.
  • Set your boundaries: If you are not comfortable with sharing your religious or spiritual beliefs with others, politely assert your boundaries.
  • Prioritize your safety: If it is unsafe to express your religious or spiritual beliefs in your host country, please make decisions that put your safety first. Consider how you might maintain your religious or spiritual practices without putting yourself at risk.
