Education Abroad Adviser’s Role

An Education Abroad adviser can provide information about the details of various study abroad locations and programs.  They are familiar with the courses, support services, application processes, housing details, program costs, cultural expectations, pre-departure requirements, and student feedback with regard to approved Penn State education abroad programs.  They support students throughout the study abroad experience.

ADVISING PROCESS

  • We want students to make the best possible decision when choosing a study abroad program. Education Abroad advisers are available to meet with students in person or by phone to discuss the student’s interests, goals, and academic requirements with the intention of matching those to a particular program.

  • Many of our international partner institutions have specific admission requirements.  Our Education Abroad advisers can explain the application process, admission decisions, and what to do once accepted.

PRE-DEPARTURE PREPARATION

Being accepted to a study abroad program is truly exciting! It also brings many questions.  Education abroad advisers help guide students through the process of preparing to go abroad.  Support offered includes:

  • Program orientation

  • Individual and group meetings

  • Advice on host institution paperwork

  • Guidance on exit and entry requirements

  • Connecting students to others going on the same program

  • General Q & A

WHILE ABROAD

  • Sometimes, students don’t think about certain issues until they arrive abroad.  Not to worry!  Our education abroad advisers can address questions via email or phone while abroad.  Often, they will connect them to a staff person on-site to address their question!

  • Questions about the course equivalency process?  Students should refer to our course equivalency process website for details.
