New Zealand and Australia: Indigenous Cultural Studies in the Visual Arts Information Session
Earn credit for ART 299 and travel to Australia and New Zealand this summer with the New Zealand and Australia: Indigenous Cultural Studies in the Visual Arts summer education abroad program led by Dr. Angela Rothrock. This three-week course will introduce you to the indigenous cultures of New Zealand and Australia through a study of visual arts texts and through learning about and meeting the people and communities that create them. You will learn about both precolonial and postcolonial indigenous cultures, including their ancient cultural traditions and artistic forms, the impact of colonization on Aboriginal Australians and New Zealand Maori, and the social and cultural position of indigenous people within the contemporary context. You will experience first-hand spectacular environments and natural wonders that are of important cultural significance, including Uluru (Ayers Rock) in Australia’s Outback and New Zealand’s geothermal Rotorua and Bay of Islands. Course highlights include a visit to a living Maori village, Hobbiton movie set tour, meeting with carving and traditional tattoo masters, visiting an arts community in the Outback, and the annual Sydney Vivid Festival. This information session will be led by Dr. Angela Rothrock who will provide an overview of the program and the application process.
